In 2000 the Verein der Freunde der Nationalgalerie inaugurated the Preis der Nationalgalerie für Junge Kunst. With a financial grant of 50,000 Euros, the Prize is one of the most highly endowed awards for contemporary art in Germany.
With the announcement of this award, the association was reacting not least of all to the fact that, in recent years, a new and young artistic and cultural scene has developed in Berlin. Young artists from around the world now come to the cultural metropolis on the Spree. Many settle down here, because they feel themselves inspired and borne aloft by the creative atmosphere of the city.
In this way the Verein der Freunde der Nationalgalerie has opened up a new field of activity for itself. It was the collector Rolf Hoffmann who, having moved from Cologne to Berlin, as a member of the Board of Trustees “infected” the Verein, not only through his enthusiasm for new art, but also because as an entrepreneur, he simultaneously had an eye on culture as an important economic factor for the city, “for culture is one of the few locational advantages of Berlin in comparison with other German cities.”
